며칠전 캐나다의 김연아 선수팬이 블로그에 포스팅한 글, "소치 피겨 스캔들: 다음 단계는? 다음 단계를 위한 가능한 제안들"이란 글을 제 블로그에 먼저 퍼온 다음, 일토방에도 올리려고 마음 먹고 있었는데, 다른 분이 다행히 올려주셔서 제가 또 올릴 필요는 없었습니다.
오늘 김연아 열애설 관련 검색어가 다음 포털에 실시간 검색 1위에 오르고, 여기저기 관련 기사로 도배되는 걸 보고, 갑자기 그 캐나다 팬의 글이 생각났습니다.
이 시점에서 제가 '김연아 스캔들'이라는 제목으로 게시판에 글을 올렸을 때, 여러분은 '김연아 열애설'을 떠올렸을까요? 아니면 '소치올림픽 스캔들'을 떠올렸을까요? 궁금해집니다.
아마도 전자를 떠올렸을 사람들도 꽤 있을 것 같습니다.
김연아 선수의 팬들은 기본적으로 김연아라는 운동 선수의 팬입니다. 김연아라는 연예인의 팬이 아니지요. 김연아 선수와 팬들의 공통 분모는 피겨라는 스포츠 종목입니다.
그녀의 스포츠 선수로서의 활약을 보고 팬이 되었든, 그녀의 피겨작품의 예술성에 빠져서 팬이 되었든,
아니면 두 가지 다이든, 피겨선수 김연아의 아름답고 놀라운 피겨세계를 공유하며, 피겨를 매개로 그녀에 대한 사랑을 함께 나누었습니다.
그녀가 연애를 하는 것이 팬들의 관심사 중 하나가 될 수는 있겠지만, 그 것은 김연아 선수와 팬들을 하나로 묶어주는 공통분모인 피겨와는 별 상관이 없는, 김연아 선수의 개인사 중에서도 아주 사적인 일에 해당합니다. 개인적인 일이지만 좋은 일이니 팬으로서 당연히 축하하는 마음은 갖고 있지만, 그런 지극히 사적인 일에 대한 이야기가 대중들의 입에 과도하게 오르내리는 것을 아무리 공인이라고 해도 누가 좋아할까요? 더구나 그런 이야기로 스포츠 게시판이 도배된다면, 그것은 게시판의 성격에도 맞지 않는다고 생각합니다.
무엇보다도, 많은 뜻있는 팬들에게는 현재 소치올림픽 스캔들 부정판정에 대한 제소라는 아주 중요한 문제와 그 것을 위한 노력이 진행중에 있습니다.
김연아선수가 피겨 선수로서 팬들에게 바친 마지막 선물, 여왕다운 최고의 작별인사로 선물한 마지막 무대를 통해, 그녀는 아무런 미련도 후회도 남지 않을 아름다운 마무리를 지었습니다.
그런데, 그녀의 아름다운 축제에 똥물을 끼얹은 자들이 스스로의 잘못을 감추기 위해 김연아 선수의 불멸의 작품을 깎아내리는 일을 미국 거대 방송사와 언론, 피겨 전문가들을 앞세워 벌이고 있는 시점에서, 팬으로서 그녀의 격에 맞는 예우를 갖춰 그녀를 보내주는 가장 적절한 방법은 무엇이라 생각하십니까? 완벽했던 여왕의 작별인사 방식에 걸맞게 그녀에게 팬들이 해줄 수 있는 작별인사의 방식은 어떤 것이어야할까요?
적어도 소치올림픽의 판정은 사기이며 조작이라는 것, 그녀가 정당한 점수를 받지 못했다는 것, 그 올림픽의 진정한 우승자는 김연아 선수였다는 것을 ISU와 IOC가 공식적으로 인정하도록 하는 것일 겁니다. 그리고 이 일을 계기로 피겨판이 조금이라도 정화될 수 있도록 하는 것이 아닐까요? 김연아 선수가 은퇴하면서 자신이 그토록 사랑했던 얼음판과 피겨라는 스포츠에 대해 가장 바라는 것도 더이상의 억울한 눈물이 나오지 않도록 피겨계가 정화되는 것이 아닐까요?
늘 불공정한 판정의 희생양이 되었던 여왕은 마지막 은퇴 무대에서까지 같은 일을 당했습니다. 그 썩어빠진 구조 속에서 그녀가 당해왔던 억울함과 아픔을 함께 아파했던 팬들로서, 스스로 해야할 일을 완벽히 마치고 최고의 선물을 선사하고 떠나는 여왕을 위한 팬들의 마지막 선물은 무엇이어야 할까요?
지금쯤 우리는 어디쯤 와있는지, 그리고 다음 단계는 무엇인지 함께 생각해 보았으면 하는 의미에서 캐나다팬이 블로그에 포스팅 했던 글을 원문과 함께 다시 올립니다. 지금 단계에서 저는 글을 쓰신 분의 제안 중 5번 항목을 특별히 강조하고 싶습니다.
대한빙상연맹이나 대한체육회에 즉각 행동할 것을 요구하라.
이 것은 해외 팬들이 할 수 있는 일이 아니고 오직 대한민국 팬들이 할 수 있는 일이고, 현재로서 가장 핵심적이고 중요한 급선무입니다.
IOC에 공식적으로 제소를 할 수 있는 기관은 대한빙상연맹 밖에 없으며 기간이 정해져 있는 일이라 (판정 후 30일 이내에 해야합니다) 남은 시간이 얼마 없습니다.
대한빙상연맹은 현재 어떻게든 시간을 끌며 제소를 안하려고 애쓰는 것처럼 보이는데, 어떤 식으로든 최대한의 압력을 가하는 것이 필요합니다.
여러 분들이 빙연에 전화후 올려주신 글을 보면, 심판의 양심선언을 기다리고 있다는 얘기를 하는데, 그 말은 제소를 할 의향이 없다는 말과 같습니다. 심판의 양심 선언이 나오면, 굳이 빙연이 제소를 안하더라도 IOC가 가만히 있을 수 없는 사안입니다. 심판의 양심선언이 나온다면, 판정 번복과 상관없이 판정이 잘못되었다는 것이 공식적으로 인정되는 것과 마찬가지인데, 가만히 있다가 그 때 숟가락 얹겠다고요?
제소를 위해서 자료나 증거가 필요하다고 하는데, 어차피 현재 IOC 규정상 제소할 수 있는 근거는 심판진 구성과 관련된 것 밖에는 없습니다.
심판진 구성에서 이해당사자가 심판을 보는 것을 금지하고 있는 ISU 규정 위반이 분명 존재하는 데, 무슨 자료가 더 필요하다는 것인지 이해가 안가는군요.
러시아 빙연의 부회장이 테크니컬 컨트롤러(점프의 회전수, 엣지콜 판정, 스핀이나 스텝 등의 레벨 판정을 결정)를 했다는 것부터가 문제입니다. 자국 선수에게 모든 요소 최고의 레벨을 주었고, 회전수부족과 엣지콜을 잡지 않았죠. 이해당사자로서 자신의 이익에 충실한 판정을 내렸습니다.
또한 심판진에 러시아 빙연 사무총장의 부인이 들어가 있었죠. 심판진 구성부터가 잘못된 것입니다. 앞으로 빙연에 전화를 하실 때, 이 부분을 강조하셨으면 하고요.
제소 청원 사이트 서명도 빠른 시일 내에 충족이 되어야 빙연에 대한 효과적 압박이 될 듯합니다.

이번 일에서 우리가 목적한 바를 이룰 확률이 얼마나 될 지는 아무도 모른다. 2002년 올림픽에서는 몇몇 목격자들로 인해 심판들 중 한명이 판정조작을 인정했기 때문에 가능했었다. 목격자들 중에는 경기의 레프리가 있었는데 그는 나중에 공식 제소를 했다. 그런데 이번에는 자백한 사람도 없고, 앞으로 나설 만큼 청렴함을 지닌 관련 인사들도 아직까지는 없다.
게다가 2002년에는 판정제도가 익명이 아니었기 때문에 나쁜 놈을 잡아내는 일은 훨씬 쉬웠다. 이번에는 심판 두명이 아델리나에게는 생뚱맞게 높은 점수를, 연아에게는 생뚱맞게 낮은 점수를 주었다는 사실을 모두 알고는 있지만 정확하게 그들이 누구인지는 밝혀낼 수 없다. 마찬가지로 프리에서 아델리나에게 거의 모두 3점의 가산점을 준 심판이 누구인지도 모른다.
그러므로 여기서 중요한 질문은 바로 “무엇”과 “왜”이다. (이 일을 하는) 우리의 목표는 무엇인가? 내 생각엔 두가지가 있다:
1.우리가 끌어낼 수 있는 최선의 결과는 바로 연아와 아델리나가 금메달을 공동으로 받는 것이다. IOC는 비단 러시아선수 뿐 아니라 그 누구에서도 금메달을 빼앗을 수는 없다. 결국 우리는 아델리나가 점수를 퍼받았다는 사실이 아니라, 연아가 받아야 할 점수보다 매우 적게 받았다는 사실을 증명하는데 포커스를 맞춰야 한다. 하지만 이것이 실제적으로 무얼 의미하는지 아니면 실현 가능한 일인지는 자신이 없다.

스스로에 묻는다:
왜 우리는 이렇게 힘겨운 싸움을 하고 있는가? “연아는 언제나 진정한 금메달리스트로 남을 거야” 라던가, “그녀는 항상 내 마음의 여왕입니다” 라는 식으로 말하고는 이 모든 일을 지나치고 마는게 훨씬 쉽다. 솔직히 말해 나도 그냥 묻고 가고 싶기도 해. 난 한국인도 아니고 피겨팬도 아니고… 다만 2010년 연아의 경기를 보고 반해 버렸을 뿐이야. 그리고 소치 올림픽에서도 이전과 버금가게 반하고 말았지. 진심으로, 연아에겐 적수가 없다. 이번 일을 내가 하는 이유는…..
1. 화가 났기 때문이다. ISU가 이런 짓을 저지르는 꼴을 그냥 두는 건 환한 대낮에 할머니가 강도 당하는 걸 그냥 두고 보는 것과 같다. 인터넷을 통해 세상 어디에서건 경기를 볼 수 있는 디지털 시대에 이렇게 대놓고 조작을 할 수 있는 저들의 뻔뻔함을 믿을 수가 없다. 우리가 모두 눈이 멀었거나 무지하다고 생각한 걸까. 우리가 두 사람의 경기를 나란히 두고 슬로우 모션으로 볼 수 있다는 생각을 저들은 못한 걸까.
2. 역시 화가 났기 때문이다. 연아가 진 이유는 연아의 프로그램이 “단순”했기 때문이라거나 그녀가 이기고 싶어하는 동기가 부족했다는 등의 이야기들이 돌고 있다. 이런 말들은 연아에 대한 모독이다. 아델리나가 이리 저리 애를 쓰며 경기를 해냈다는 이유만으로 연아의 프로그램이 쉬웠다고 말할 수 있는가! 연아의 경기력이 뛰어나서 그저 힘들어 보이지 않았을 뿐이라고! 그리고 세상 어느 누가 어떤 동기도 없이 그 모든 부상과 힘든 훈련을 무릅쓰고 올림픽 2연패에 도전을 하겠는가? 장난해? 연아가 제 아무리 담담해 보여도 그 속이 어땠을까? 저들의 이 모든 썩어빠진 계락들이 모두 끝나는 순간 물론 연아는 편안함을 느꼈겠지만 또한 황량했겠지.
3. 무엇보다 난 정의를 원한다. 난 캐나다인이고 테사와 스캇이 금 대신 은을 딴 게 못내 실망스럽지만 미국 페어팀도 아주 잘 탔다. 그래서 테사와 스캇이 그들에게 졌다는 사실을 받아 들일 수 있었다. 그렇지만 아델리나는 연아 근처에도 오지 못했다고! 내 생각엔, 연아가 설사 쇼트와 프리 모두에서 넘어졌더라도 적어도 동메달이었을 실력이라고.
어떻게: 이제 어떤 방법을 취하느냐가 남았다. “무엇을 할 것인가?”를 놓고 나는 요즘 많은 생각을 한다. 심판이나 레프리 중 누구 하나가 옳은 일을 하겠다고 나서지 않는 한 2002년보다 나쁜 상황이다. 우리는 “쪽수”로 밀고 나가야만 한다. 끈기가 있는 많은 사람들이 나서야만 한다. 그저 앉아서 기다리면서 남이 해주기를 바랄 수는 없는 일이다. 내가 생각해 보았거나 어디에서 읽었던 방법들을 다음에 모아 보았다. 누구라도 좋은 생각이 떠오르면 덧붙여 주길 바란다.

2. ISU의 급소를 공격하라
ISU는 빙상경기를 관할하는 기구이다. 그렇다면 ISU는 누가 관할하는가? IOC? change.org의 청원사이트에 의하면 몇몇 사람들이 IOC의 윤리위원회 (Ethics Commission)에 연락을 취했다는데 나는 그 이메일을 찾을 수가 없다. 아무거나 거기 연락처를 가진 사람 있나?

(솔트레이크 올림픽 페어 종목에 관한) 이 기사를 보면 재미있는 문장이 나온다 - “IOC의 결정은 피겨스케이팅 국제중재패널의 공청회가 열리기 몇시간 전에 나왔다. 공청회는 취소됐다.” 이 “국제중재패널”이 어떤 곳인지 아는 사람?
국제빙상연맹(ISU)은 주수입원이 어디지? 후원을 받나? 아니면 주관경기의 티켓판매수익인가? 내가 일전에 피겨경기를 보이코트하는 것에 대해 언급한 적이 있는데, 우리는 더 나아가 ISU와 관련된 것들을 보이코트하는 것도 생각해 볼 필요가 있다. 예를 들면 ISU를 후원하는 기업이나 주관경기를 중계하는 방송국 등을 보이코트하는 것 말야. ISU의 주수입원이 무엇인지를 알아내야 해.
모든 필요한 정보를 서치할 시간이 없어서 미안하지만 내 생각에는 위에 명기한 것들이 우리가 앞으로 나아갈 길에 좋은 그림이 될 거라 본다. 더 좋은 생각이 있으면 함께 나누길 바래.
마지막으로 아주 중요한 것은, 이 블로그가 훌륭하긴 하지만 여기 코멘트란 보다는 더 나은 온라인 장소가 필요한 것 같다. 서로 소통할 더 나은 공간이 필요해. 아마 페이스북 그룹같은?

S*****e, no offense, but no one really knows how much chance we have in this. The 2002 case is very different because one of the judges broke down in front of several eyewitnesses and admitted that she cheated. One of the eyewitnesses was the event referee, who later filed an official complaint. No one broke down this time and no “insider” with integrity has stepped forward so far.
Also, the judging system back then wasn’t anonymous, and so it was much easier to spot the cheater. This time around, even though we know as a fact that two judges in the short program gave Adelina inconsistently high component scores and Yuna inconsistently low ones, we don’t know who those judges are. Likewise for the judge who gave Adelina almost all +3 GOE’s in the free program.
So I think the more important questions are “what” and “why”. What are our goals here? For me there are two:
1. The best outcome is Yuna and Adelina both get a gold medal. Let’s just admit that there is no way IOC will strip anyone of a gold medal, let alone a Russian woman figure skater. This may mean that our focus should be to demonstrate that Yuna has been underscored, not that Adelina has been overscored. I’m not sure what it means in practical terms or how achievable it is though.
2. Failing that, I would be content, but not happy, if we could get ISU to change the scoring system. The scoring system CANNOT be anonymous, and there has to be accountability with checks and balances in place. Also, with all the technologies we have available today, it’s really easy to implement some sort of challenge-and-instant-review system. Even the NFL has this.
NEXT QUESTIONS:
WHY are you doing this? Why are you fighting this uphill battle? It’s so much easier to just say stuff like “Yuna will always be the real gold medalist”, “She will always be the Queen in my heart”, etc., and just let all of this slide. I’ll be honest, it’s really tempting for me to just let all of this go. I’m not Korean, and I’m not even a skating fan, but I was truly mesmerized by her performances in 2010, and I was equally mesmerized by her this time around. She is indeed without equal. I’m doing this because:
1. I’m angry. Letting the ISU get away with this is like seeing someone robs an old lady in broad daylight and not do something about it. I can’t believe they have the audacity to cheat so blatantly in this day and age with videos of the performances replaying all over the internet. As if they think we are all blind and ignorant. As if we don’t have access to slow-motion videos replaying side-by-side.
2. I’m angry. I see some comments of people saying Yuna lost because her program was “simple”, because she didn’t have the motivation to win. This is an insult to Yuna. Just because Adelina struggled through her programs doesn’t mean Yuna’s programs were simple. She is just so good that she made it look effortless. And would anyone without motivation go through all the injuries and hard work to come back to the Olympics to defend her title? Seriously? No matter how stoic she appears to be, I have to believe she’s devastated inside, even if she is indeed feeling relieved at the same time that all of this shenanigan is now over.
3. Above all, I want justice! I am Canadian, and I was very disappointed that Virtue and Scott got a silver medal instead of a gold, but the American team was very, very good as well. I can accept that Virtue and Scott lost fair and square. But Adelina didn’t even come close to Yuna! And to think that had Yulia not fallen in both programs, Yuna would very, very likely have gotten a bronze instead…
HOW: Now the interesting part, how? What can we do? I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Without any of the judges or referees stepping up and doing the right thing, our situation is worse than the 2002 case. The only leverage we have is numbers. We need to have lots and lots of people with perseverance, and we can’t afford to sit and wait for someone else to do something. Here are some things I can think of or have read somewhere else. Please add anything you can come up with.
1. Make lots and lots of noise for as long as it takes
(1) Email a link to this blog post to any media outlets you can think of. NBC, CNN, CBC, BBC, etc.

(4) If you have an extra stamp and envelope around, send them a good old-fashioned mail.

I don’t know whether this makes a difference or not, but perhaps we should get as many non-Koreans as possible to do this as well? I wonder how many people are dismissing this whole scandal because they think it’s just the Koreans whining about a Korean figure skater losing the gold medal.
2. Hit ISU where it hurts
ISU is the governing body of skating, but who governs the ISU? IOC? An update to the change.org petition says that some people have been contacting the Ethics Commission of the IOC, but I can’t seem to find their email address. Does anyone have it? If not, fax/mail/call, whatever it takes.

In this article, there is an interesting sentence: “The IOC decision came just hours before the case was to be heard by an international arbitration panel for sport. The hearing was canceled.” Does anyone know what this “international arbitration panel for sport” is?
Where does ISU get its income? Sponsorship? Ticket sales to its events? I mentioned boycotting figure skating competitions in one of my earlier comments, and I think we can expand that to boycotting anything related to ISU as well: its sponsors, any channels showing their competitions, etc. We just need to find out what its income source is.
Sorry I haven’t had time to dig up all the info yet, but I think the above is a good framework for moving forward. Please feel free to contribute any ideas you have.
Last but not least, I think we need a better virtual gathering place than the comments section of a blog post (albeit an excellent one). We need a better communication channel. Any suggestions? Perhaps a FB group?

Hi Onsemiro, I agree we should take action. Keeping silent would just encourage this happening again. Individuals and groups will be emboldened to propagate and continue this kind of behavior, because the governing bodies such as the ISU, who are supposed to be looking after the well-being of the sport, are taking a blind eye.
And who knows just how much the sport might be transformed for the worse because of this? Imagine, all federations just vying for advantage this way and that, cheating all over the place, just because nobody is going to punish them anyway. As they say, "If you can't beat them, join them." How many will succumb to this kind of thinking?
